Course Description

In the early centuries CE, Buddhism spread eastward from its origins in India to China, Korea, and Japan. It brought with it a rich religious tradition that altered forever the visual arts of these regions. Students in this course will explore the painting, sculpture, and monuments of the East Asian Buddhist world from ancient times to the twentieth century, paying particular attention to issues of patronage, ritual, iconography, symbolism, and style in order to better understand the complex relationships between religion and art. No prerequisites.
