Course Description

Intensive study of selected subjects within the field of Cells, Genes, and Molecules. Fall 2025 Topic: Principles of Synthetic Biology is a multidisciplinary field that designs and constructs new biological entities such as enzymes, genetic circuits, and entire cells, or redesigns existing biological systems. In synthetic biology, we aim to reliably and rapidly engineer biological functions for applications in medicine, biotechnology, and green chemistry. To better grasp the potential of synthetic biology, we will cover topics including, but not limited to, DNA assembly methods, metabolic engineering, directed evolution, controlled sub-cellular localization, precise sensing, and targeted therapeutic delivery. With these topics, we will engage in discussions and problem solving to practice applying synthetic biology principles. After the fundamentals, synthetic biology topics suggested by students will be covered in class. To cap the course, we will investigate contemporary advances in synthetic biology, the benefits to society, and the possible ethical implications. Three lecture hours per week. Prerequisite BIOL 221. Corequisite BIOL 220.
